got a phone call from one of my pals yesterday . can i pop round and take a look at the tiling im having done, he usually uses me but i was busy anyway
gets round to house 2 ensuites 600x400 tiles dot and dabbed with green star, i know the tiler who is doing it and im shocked at his method of tiling

told my pal rip the lot down and start again , so im now doing the job for him , he rang the tiler to come and get his tools , he also paid him for the day which i think was very decent of him considering the mess he had made

the so called tiler told him i allways use green star and have never had a problem , would you give me another chance to sort it out, sorry but no chance , one of the walls he had started he aint even spaced them , no tanking to shower walls , and i noticed a bottle of pva in one of the rooms
anyway is lack of knowledge have gained me some more work, has i can now fit my pal in

I was in my local supplier the other day and listened to a conversation that I couldn't believe. The guy looked like a tradesman but then again.
Tradesman: so I have laid my underfloor heating and I am just about to lay the tiles, I am going to dot and dab them so what adhesive do you recommend? I was thinking of greenstar?
Sales: no to greenstar and no to dot and dab sir.
Trades: ok which adhesive then, but I will still dot and dab?
Sales: toppfix or bal various bags etc.
Trades: that sounds too dear to me I am going to try the greenstar, give me 10 tubs.
The conversation did go on more than that but you get the jist. That is what everyone is up against. It's no wonder people think anyone can chuck up a couple of tiles. I was laughing at the time but someone is getting ripped off but thinking they are getting a good job.:yikes:

Another reason why licensing should be introduced in this industry, far to many cowboys in the trade, and not enough tradsmen.:mad2:
Fair comment but I'm not sure licensing is always the answer, a cowboy will always be a cowboy and you will never stop them until a complete mind shift happens at the customer stage, customers still have that stupid opinion that 3 quotes for the same job, two are all but the same and one is hundreds cheaper they go for that one without thinking why. And I feel that licensing might just mean yet another annual bill to a governing body while them horse boys don't bother paying.

the guy in question obviously has very little knowledge of tiling and prep work, greenstar £4.70 a tub , when he could get weber set plus for about £6 a bag , weber tanking kit for £48.00 , he dont cost a great deal more to do the job right , just knowledge and explaining to the customer the benefits of the of the extra cost

Saem thing happened to me years ago.... trader (older guy) comes in to TG and wipes out there entire stock of D1 with a slightly "i shoiuld be very impressed" look on his face, he then proceded to tell me what it was for (obviously i wasnt impressed enough) so he needed to reinforce his magnificance... "ye, im putting up these massive 600 x 300's and boy do they eat up the adhesive...(grin)... I asked why he didnt just use bags of cement, he laughed and said "because you need to mix that up"... there no point trying to tell someone of this guys age and obvious stupidity why he should bnot be doing this so i just laughed a bit.
