just the boy

I work for a plumber who does his own tiling. Current job porcelain tiles walls and floor with same tile. Customer wants the same colour grout on both. As I`ve been landed with the grouting I have a question. 2mm joints on walls and 3mm on floor. I`ve been given 2 different grey grouts to use but neither specificly states that they are suitable for walls, but one does a joint from 3mm the other from 4mm. As I take a bit of pride in my work I have been down this road before and found the floor grout was too gritty for a decent finish on walls. He tells me he has problems sourcing grey wall grout locally, and basically get on with it. Any comments.

Using general grout on walls is a bit more time consuming, a proper smooth 2mm wall grout is what you want. But if that is all you have be prepared for it sloping off the grouting float or being too stiff to work into the grout lines.
When ive been stuck like this when a client supplies srap gear, try adding a bit of flexi admix, that helps a bit.
Good luck.
