Grout above worktops

I have noticed that between the worktop and the row of tiles directly above is usually either cement based grout that cracks and/or Silicon that turns mouldy around the sink.

Could the gap above the worktop be filled with expoy grout or flexible grout instead and avoid both the mould and the cracking?

I am not a tiler I am a cleaner of tile and grout amongst other things.

i use an anti-bactrial mould resistant Silicon and don't have any probs,grout is a no-no

Is this Silicon with Microban different from the usual mould resistant grout as available in B&Q? I find that to be pretty poor. I've used it many times and the mould still appears.

Just out of interest, how would epoxy grout work in this instance?

Epoxy grout does not come in a tube so applying it as Silicon wont work, it will be a different colour to your wall grout as well. B&Q Silicon is something I do not use, try dow corning or a similar quality make, and dont use your finger to smooth after it has been in your mouth, no wonder it goes black.

Thanks diamondtiling but struggling to find a dow corning supplier and certainly dont know of any quality Silicon brands hence having shopped at b&q.

re. epoxy grout, I was only thinking of applying it as normal to the bottom row of tiles and surely the white epoxy would match up?

There is no guarantee it would match up. If you bought white grout from one tile shop and white grout from another they would both be different shades, your trying to match epoxy grout to powdered grout, more chance of platting fog I think.

So can I assume that Dow Corning Silicon will not go black after 6 months as with Uni bonds anti mould Silicon?

I use Dow Corning 785 for most of my Silicon jobs and have had no issues. Just make sure that the Silicon is "high modulus" and you should be fine .
