Hallway nightmare

Hi all
We lifted the carpet in the hall so that we could lay some nice porcelain tiles. All was good until I saw what was under the underlay :yikes: Black bitumen from vinyl tiles that had been removed

I have spent some 4 hours today chipping away the top layer of screed / bitumen. Reading their threads all I need to do is use either a slurry mix or Ardex , however , this is in direct contradiction to the advice from Topps Tiles.

Would appreciate any comments re the advice or what we should do

if the bitumen is sound I'd be inclined to go with a sbr/cement slurry coat and then tile it. Out of curiousity what was Topps advice?

Hi Doug

Their advice is to completely remove 98 % of the bitumen. Then SLC to repair any damage. Then 2 part flexible adhesive

Good advice ? They also said the Fein Multimaster wasn't any good ?

ahh right, I actually mis-read your original post, I thought that your carpet had been laid on hot poured bitumen, missed the bit about vinyl tiles,,, yes, best thing is to remove as much of the bitumenous adhesive as you can, then I'd go for what I've suggested. A heat gun or hair dryer should soften the adhesive sufficiently to be able to scrape it off. Hope this helps you.

Last night I tried heat gun & even a blowtorch. Nothing has shifted it. Today I have used a scutch chisel to remove top layer of bitumen/cement Long winded but leaves a rough concrete screed to bond to. To finish the area will take probably 2 days of solid chipping. Happy to do this if it is the correct thing to do hence asking the question

I would agree with Doug, ideally if you could remove as much as poss but if it is sound slurry bond is the way to go.

Slurry bond being 50/50 PVA/SBR with straight cement ?

Not PVA mate SBR, I prefer SBR and mapei keraquick, rather than OPC, as I would use Mapei to fix the tiles.

Got the SBR today. Already got some OPC. if I mix & roller on how long should it take to dry ? I think I read somewhere that it takes about 40 mins ?
