Hi all
We lifted the carpet in the hall so that we could lay some nice porcelain tiles. All was good until I saw what was under the underlay :yikes: Black bitumen from vinyl tiles that had been removed

I have spent some 4 hours today chipping away the top layer of screed / bitumen. Reading their threads all I need to do is use either a slurry mix or Ardex , however , this is in direct contradiction to the advice from Topps Tiles.

Would appreciate any comments re the advice or what we should do

Thanks

ahh right, I actually mis-read your original post, I thought that your carpet had been laid on hot poured bitumen, missed the bit about vinyl tiles:oops:,,, yes, best thing is to remove as much of the bitumenous adhesive as you can, then I'd go for what I've suggested. A heat gun or hair dryer should soften the adhesive sufficiently to be able to scrape it off. Hope this helps you.

Hi Doug
Last night I tried heat gun & even a blowtorch. Nothing has shifted it. Today I have used a scutch chisel to remove top layer of bitumen/cement Long winded but leaves a rough concrete screed to bond to. To finish the area will take probably 2 days of solid chipping. Happy to do this if it is the correct thing to do hence asking the question
