Will say,that tiling with Sand and Cement your trowels stayed a lot cleaner.

You had it easy - wheelbarrow/overalls/only 10 m2 of tiles/ 20miles and a flat tyre - we had to work in the only clothes we had, run the 50 miles to the job pushing a cart with 20 sq yards of quarry tiles and all the sand/cement for a days work! And we never complained.

Wonder if some of the younger tilers know what a tile beater was or the art of backing a tile,lol.

Aye and driers when you where grouting and no washboys then ,soaking the tiles in a forty gallon drum for the walls and having to break the ice in the morn to get em out,and then up the ladders to pass them through the window,tiling today easy

My boss wouldn't even buy a mixer,he used to say he had one walks talks and brews up , (me), he was a hard taskmaster and also a right b.....d,taught me a lot but a nasty man,if he got out of the wrong side of the bed everybody had to suffer

He wouldnt buy jollys (mitres) i ihad to back edge the tiles with pin hammer and rub them down

My old boss made us clean the floors with wet sawdust he would go berserk if he caught you washing of with a sponge,he said using a sponge recesses the joints,then again he would let you swab the floor with an old towel.
