Hi
I have a wood burning stove in my fireplace. It has generated a really good heat but unfortunately the surrounding plaster has blown. I want to tile the recess with large Travertine tiles but I am unsure of which adhesive to use. It has been suggested thst I use a fire cement. Can anyone advise.
Thanks
Terry
Helo Terry, buy bal rapid set white, patch the plaster with it and use for the tiling..it must be white to stop bleed through of colour to the face which you may get with grey adhesive. Also use flexible grout and seal the tiles before grouting....these are my recommendations for your job.....Gaz

BAL Bond SBR
bond_sbr.jpg
A waterbased polymer with a wide variety of uses in the construction industry, particularly as an admixture and bonding agent for cement and concrete applications. Once cured, the polymer is water and frost resistant. BAL BOND SBR can be used as a slurry coat when mixed with hydraulic cement or gypsum plaster, as a multi-purpose admixture for cement:sand mortars, concrete and gypsum plaster; as a brush applied primer, sealer or dustproofer.

Suitable for use on cement:sand screeds, toppings or renderings, plastering, waterproofing, bonding, concrete repair, priming and sealing.

The problem with gypsum based plaster/plasterboard close to heat sources is that the water which is chemically bound in it evaporates if the material is subjected to heat above 50 degrees celcius for extended periods of time. That makes the material crumble and crack, and any tiles mounted on it might come loose and/or crack. I would rip away the plaster and fit something more heat resistent before proceeding, like (I don't know the english term for it) concrete reinforced wallboard.
