hello - can u help with tile adhesive for reclaimed parquet flooring?

Have browsed the web and am overwhelmed with info! Now to ask the experts as have found this blog - yippee! :hurray:
Have reclaimed parquet flooring (small 5-piece oblong in squares, then squares of 9) which was previously laid with black stuff (asphalt?) onto chipboard.
Want to lay it on a concrete floor.
Any help most appreciated.

Have concerns that the leftover asphalt stuff and/or the netting will impede the laying of the tiles. Also, are some adhesives better for this kind of job than others

I assume these are not full parquet blocks but the type bought in DIY sheds on a mesh in a preformed pattern ?

Sounds about right. Can't say to be honest but really appreciate your input. They're pretty old, probably from the 70s/80s/90s.

Well if they have mesh on the backs then you cant clean the old adhesive off using the same method that I did for my parquet, which was pushing every piece through a wood thicknesser.
I relaid mine with Sika Fix I believe it was called, I also used a special filler that was mixed with the dust that was collected when the parquet was sanded.

would it be ok to use the adhesive and put the mesh block tiles straight onto it? As the previous glue has come off really cleanly. The mesh seems to have been stuck on with the black stuff too.

i think that would be a real fiddly job and would be very hard to get the blocks uniform and looking good. you will need the concrete floor perfectly flat too.

It could be done but as Mike says it would be a fiddle. If you could get them reasonably flat then you could always sand them flat when adhesive has set.

So, is it a case of don't bother? Or, do I take all off the mesh and use the single oblong pieces....... ! Am unsure of how best to proceed. Any advice?

sorry sir ramac, hadn't seen your post. am very tempted to sand flat after laying just unsure about purchasing adhesive for over £100 and then it being a failure, could've done something else for the floor with the money!

Yes the adhesive is expensive and so is the other stuff needed , fillers and finishes !
It would all depend on why the reason for using old parquet ? For me when I did mine it was a case of I like reclaiming old stuff and it was also cheap on Ebay. It actually cost more for the other items than the actual parquet.
I would look at buying new if you really want a parquet floor, other than that it will be expensive and time consuming.

I too wanted to use old stuff and enjoy reclaiming. Thanks for all the advice, warnings and will consider my options - tho' buying a new floor is not an option. More a matter of painting/varnishing the concrete or alternative covering.

i really would depend on how flat the backs of the wood was, any lumps of old adhesive will affect the laying of the floor. The adhesive used to re-lay is not suitable for making up differences in thickness. It should be spread very thinly.

there is nothing but flat on the back, they 'popped' off. it's time and expense as you say. There are many 5-bit single pieces too...!
