I'm not a real tiler but I always end up saying 'YES' if anyone asks me if I can cover the tiling aspect of a job. I operate a property maintenance business and over the years I have found that the more proficient I become at something the more I enjoy doing it so tiling is now one of those things!

I like beer, sex, adrenaline sports and rock so I guess I am more of a tiler than I thought!

Just to start the ball rolling, I have a cloakroom to refit and have to tile the floor and walls. I wonder if members prefer to do the walls first, then the floor or vice versa. I personally will attack the walls first on this job. My customer wants the toilet placed on top of the tiles rather than cutting the tiles around the base and as it's her only loo this needs to be installed the same day.

Happy tiling or whatever you do to pass the day,

Hi Jeremy welcome aboard.

Walls first for me to stop the floor getting messy.

Checkout the Extreme Sports Forum too - might be your flavour.

How long have you been doing property maintenance for then?

Didn't know about this forum. is martial arts go in to extreme sport category? :shy:

Hi Jeremy, are your floor tiles going to bond with your walls? ie. are they going to pick up joint? if the room is a simple shape then either way, if more complex I would tile the floor first, then cover with protec leaving 20mm gap around the perimeter so I can pick the floor tile joints and carry them up the walls. Either way you should set your walls and floor so they marry up. If the floor tiles will not bond with your walls ( different size) then walls first. Hope this makes sense.

Hello Dan,
Good tip as were many of those who replied. I have been an aircraft electrician for British Aerospace, a controls engineer for a swiss company, then went into general building maintenance as a site engineer/supervisor on a couple of sites before starting my own business in 2009. In all I have covered a maintenance role for more than 20 years. I love being self employed!

Great reply Phil!
I don't know what tiles my customer is going to pick yet but the info you gave was spot on for tiles of matching dimensions and came across clear as a bell. It's only a cloakroom so not a major job but I am putting in the suite as well. She wants the pan on top of the tiles so fast setting adhesive will be the way to go as she will be expecting to use the loo before the day is out!
