hello to all.

i dont know where to start.

i have no experience in tiling or diy in that matter but am considering tiling training course in cannock(staffs).
i have been quoted 775 for a 2 weeks course and the missus reckons its not a good career move. im currently stuck in a dead end job and am on minnimum wage.

any advice highly appreciated thanks

moe

Dead end job on minimum wage, and if you feel you can put your hand to new skills then go for it mate, get on a course, learn what you can in the 2 weeks, and if you feel confident in tiling, see if theres any family or friends that need some tiling work doing.
Gain experiance doing this as much as you can, while still working the normal job, and see if you can get any paying customers by advertising yourself once you feel you can do a good enough job for someone to pay you for.

But never just jump in and quit the day job is my view, things don't generally happen quick enough for that, start getting in some work at the weekends if thats when you have your days off, then see how it goes mate.

Best of luck.

our bathroom(pretty small) needs re-tiling maybe this would be my first attempt if i do decide to take up the course.

Yep, thats exactly what you need moe, because it's a whole different ball game starting a tiling job after you have finished a course as theres no one there to tell you what to do, like there will be on the course, but that's why us lot are here, any help you need can be found on here by simply asking away 🙂

i friend of mine who was in the same boat . i told him to go for it and that if i needed a hand i'd also get him to work with me so improve his skill, speed and knowledge. he did the course and really enjoyed it, afterwards he got the yellow pages rang around to see if anyone needed a hand work wise he got his brake with a guy who had picked up a decent contract and gave my mate a go he's still working for him now for £15m2 . he enjoys what hes doing and earning alot more

he did say though even the course was enjoyable at the time it really taught him nothing
it just came him that confidence to go for it.

fine out what type of things you are going to be learning first before you hand money over
i.e different ways of tiling ,brickbound, dimond etc.tanking, underfloor heating. get a full course break down.

the main thing with tiling in my eyes is setting out , its something that you've got to learn it means where your going to start and where your cuts are going to fall ,its the difference between a **** job and a good job.

go on the course and learn this , alot of the other aspects of tiling like what adhesives to use and what grouts best for the job , can all be looked up in guides bal do excellent leaflets that help you in this way. plus theres this brill forum too.

its really up to you mate , i mean you mite not even enjoy tiling it can be hard graff too make no bones about it.

shaun....

Hi Moe,
1yr ago i was an IT manager for Arla foods one of the biggest dairy companies in the country, i was sick of looking at computers all day so i went on the North East tiling training course in south shields, it is a brilliant course run by a great guy called Darren, i came out of there confident enough to go into some ones house and make a good job, so i told arla where to stick their job and I got some cards printed and passed them round builders, plumbers, kitchen and bathroom centres you name I went in to try and sell myself! one week later I got my first job and I have never stopped since, I do regular work for quite afew companies now aswell as my own work, so if you have the determination you can make it work. go for it!!

Moe,

Welcome to the forum. I hope that whichever avenue you choose to walk down you find it's the one for you.

You've certainly hit the right forum for advice on the matter though.
