Hi all

Can anyone give me some advice on leveling a wall prior to tiling please. Here's the story so far - did PTS course, have a few jobs for New Year so I decided to do our bathroom. Only half tiled - so no probs. When taped it sounded like an out of tune drum machine - so over tiling was out. Strip off - those by shower and wet areas almost fell off to reveal nasty brown stained substrate. Those elsewhere only cam off with sizeable portins of the wall. New plasterboard and aquapanel later - I need to level the walls to match the other half. I did read in another thread about using a mix that gave a great surface for tiling - but can't find it now - it was a comment within a thread and search doesn't show it. I am not a plasterer but I think I could achieve an acceptable result - I have a plasterer coming to take a look on Monday - so if I can save a few bob it would be nice

Lessons learned? Removing tiles is dirty, laborious and time consuming - I have taken 2 days so far as the bath and shower had to come oot - plus the sink and loo. Then they had to be put back - only one bathroom to use - I will definately not underestimate tile removal in furture.

Any help would be appreciated

cheers

Droopy

Remove all the plasterboard and do as Gaz says, reboard by dotting and dabbing new plasterboard (12mm greenboard would be best imo).

That way you do not have to wait for the plaster drying for a couple of weeks before you tile it.

And it also give a far better surface than plaster to tile to, if you do it right. Just keep check the boards with your six ft level as you put them up.

Thanks for all the useful replies
Strange bathroom that I have - only the walls by the shower and along bath are plasterboard - the other 2 are sound. The damage was limited to the shower area which I have replaced with aquapanel. I was looking for the best material to bring the levels up and be waterproof.

Thanks Grumpy - Ardex AM100 - was exactly what I was looking for.

I think I will let the plasterer have a go at this as some of the damage caused by removing the old tiles ( plus using my new chisel action drill and cranked bit )

Must get this done before Xmas or it won't just be the fruit thats ripe in our house!

Once again thanks for the help.

Cheers mate - an added bonus then.
Will I be restricted to using only ardex products after using it? I was going to use bal white
or even webber
A new ctd opens by me Monday - so I may be going with what ever specials there are - I think the grand opening with all the freebies ( as promised to me) is wednesday

excellent
was going to do a travertine job, but too cold to keep going up and down for wet cuts - haven't got my bricolinna yet (£120 delivered from contractors direct europe - evere used them?) just a soaking producing cheap (but good) plasplugs.
Will do a smallish sized ceramic job now with border. We are moving next year, so as long as it looks good.

Okay more help please - any one know where to actually lay their hands on Ardex AM100 or its Bal eqiv?

I have tried Topps - don't sell it but can get it in 2 weeks (maybe). Tile centre and CTD (new in Kings Norton - don't do weber, ardex or stock the bal render)plus the price of their Rubi was stupid and that was with 20% off - using Niel at buybrands. got a good deal on a few essentials.
So anyone help - need for saturday night

Cheers

Sully
