How hard can it be to find a decent tiler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Quick background (might have mentioned before???) we were due to fit 4 bathrooms and a kitchen in a property that is having a major refurb so was a bit of a slow burner. At the begining of the year the builder who is a nice bloke and happens to be the uncle of the lady of the house decided he wanted a crack at the bathrooms as he enjoys them. No problem as we were busy so it was agreed i'd just design and supply. Tiles get delivered and he craps himself, not quite the 4" bumpy whites he was expecting.
No way I could fit them im so agreed I would find a tiler, spoke to a few lads on here but they were busy so after a long serch a recommendation came via my porcelanosa rep for a tiler in croydon. Never met the guy but high praise from my rep so he gets the job, he tells me he can get one of his guys down asap.
Tiler turns up and starts saying he has concerns about mitering the slate. He starts to lay the floor but then I find out at the end of the day he rips the whole lot up as the tiles aren't calibrated and he run out of addy bed. Now I have the same tiles on the job i'm on at the momemt and whilst I haven't taken a guage to them they certainly look calibrated to me, if they are different thickness then we are talking 1mm either way not 3/4/5mm.
Customer sees the tiles ripped up and leaning against newly painted walls along with chips on the edges of the tiles where he's pulled them up. He questions him on the chips and he says "they're natural stone mate, what do you expect?"
I then find out he doesn't work directly for the tiler I found but is being subbed the job out so starts bitching that it's not the job he thought it was. The next day and another day of him telling my client it can't be mitred and how about some nice trim? yeah right! it's 16mm thick slate so a whacking great thick trim is going to look lovely. Next day and more bitching to the trades on site that in 14 years tiling he's never heard of stone being mitred or bullnosed. What he doesn't know is 90% of trades on site are friends of the client and it gets back to me that 'he's whining like a *****'.
So I ring the main tiler and express my concerns and is he sure this guy can deliver? I'm reassured he can. I reassure the tiler that I don't care if it costs more as all that matters is the job is done right, he was explained this wasn't a whack it in job but care and attention are needed especially with the price of the tiles. Another day and another bitching tiler.
Oh it gets better, the tiler was bitching that he has had to wet cut all the tiles. What did he expect on thick stone? He's using a norton clipper i'm told.
What do I have to do to find a decent tiler?
I had agreed up to £50 a meter for the stone (labour only) with the client and there is maybe 4m max of mitering (600x300 tiles)
If anybody wants this please put your hand up as I'm losing the will to live. (This is the job I posted in the 'looking for...' section
