Hello people,
I've only been registered a couple of days and have been searching for knowledge. There is plenty of it on here. But some conflicting views. I will be tiling a bathroom for a mate and he wants tile on tile. The existing tiles are all sound. I have had a look at many past threads and am now confused! Do I need to score the tiles and sugar soap, or just sugar soap? If I need to score what is the quickest way? Angle grinder? Do I use BAL WHITE STAR? Do I use ARDEX X7? Do I use ARDEX X7 with ARDEX E90? Do I do something else? Cheers in advance.

hello and welcome to the tilers forum. You will always find conflicting methods as every one is different.

Personally i would use a 4inch grinder to score and then soap and water to clean with before tiling. But 9 times out of 10 i would always push for the tiles to be removed where ever humanly possible.

You asked about which adhesive to use I have always used BAL Whitestar myself on walls never tried anything else so can only comment on that particular product which i rate very higlhy. All the best for the future mate:thumbsup:

Sugar soap and whitestar, depending on tile size that's to be fitted.

Main thing to take into account is the combined weight of both layers of tiles, and is it still within acceptable limits of the substrat.

As Raja, I always try to get the customer to have the tiles removed if possible.
I agree with Feks here.

The question arises on choices of adhesive once we know what size tile you are putting up...White Star up to 30x30....anything larger format then prime with APD and use cement based adhesive..I would use flexible if onto studwork....Gaz:yes:

hi wagglerman..welcome to the forums mate.......no need to score tiles at all with todays adhesives.....whitestar or single part flexi....wash tiles first with sugar soap ..leave to dry and then tile.......do think about the weights though if using a large tile....good luck and let us know which way you went.....

I had to do a tile on tile in an en-suite recently.

First, check that the existing tiles are securely fixed, go round tapping them all, in case of a hollow sound. Clean with sugar soap and then select a suitable adhesive depending on the size of tiles.

I had to put up 400 x 200 tiles and used Mapei D2 (which amazingly was ready for grouting the next day!). The fella at Topps suggested BAL Grip but the BAL helpline said I would need to allow 4 days before grouting, which is why I went with the Mapei addy.

My customer is really pleased with the results and now wants me to do their main bathroom.
