Help with plasterboard

Hi

Can anyone help - my first job is rapidly getting out of hand!!!

I have chipped away a set of old tiles over the bath but taken some plasterboard
with them. I know I can cut out the damaged plasterboard and
replace it but do I need to plaster over the new board to fill any
gaps? If so what type of plaster would you recommend? I will be tiling
over the new board so it doesn't have to look good, just be a
good surface to hold the adhesive.
