Hi all,

We employed a tiler to lay some rectified wood effect planks in a herringbone pattern…

The grout width was set at 2mm…

The floor is yet to be grouted but to our untrained eyes we have noticed some strange things. For example in one area the grout width was 3mm + and in another area there is no grout width! Please see picture with red arrows.

I asked him to explain why this was and he blamed the tiles…

Is this acceptable?
Many thanks

Hi. The joints can run tight if the tiling isn’t square. I’ve laid a lot of herringbone plank floors and the initial setting out has to be spot on square. Some tiles can be sizey , so extra care and adjustments are required as fixing.
Tbh a mm or so here and there isn’t too big an issue once grouted.

As above the setting out is crucial even if you're straight with planks because they can warp and stuff so usually need some sort of wedge spacer sometimes.

Where did you get your tiler from can I ask?

Hi all we asked for 2mm and now that it’s been grouted there are multiple joints at 3mm and even 4mm.
Is this acceptable. Or shall I take it up with the tiler.
The whole idea of 2mm was to give the illusion of a seamless floor.
Here how it looks now

"Rectified" those tile could of gone bevel to bevel or 1-1.5mm gap but that kind of laying would probably cost you double what you paid for the tiles
2mm would be massive if was real wood planks , seamless , think you need a grout that matches for seamless and not one that contrasts
