Hi everybody , my name is Robert and im from Cardiff. I am not a tiler by trade and have never done any tiling but that will change in the not too distant future. I have debated tiling my bathroom for years but was always slightly intimidated by the job. However i am a keen DIY'er and believe that if a job needs doing you should always at least make the effort to try ( except obviously specialist jobs ). So i find myself here as a new member of tilersforums.com , i have no doubt that i will be given expert advice and support when its needed and answers to my questions. So thanks in advance to anybody who helps me out.

I am looking forward to discussing all aspect of tiling , as i want to learn and advance my skills in the hope that when i do attempt my bathroom, i do as good a job as i can

welcome to the forum if you haven't got a clue what to do are you sure you're up to doing a good job on it? if so there'll be plenty on here to help you, as for tools you'll need loads but im sure you can beg borrow and steal some to do the job. to work out how many tiles you need measure the area on the walls, width x height. the boxes of tiles will tell you the area, i.e. m2 per box. good luck

A fellow Welshman

so for example - a 3m wide wall with a height of 2m would be 6m square ?

Sorry if i come across as dumb - maths was never my strong suit ! I also read that you have to add 10% to allow for breakages/damaged tiles , is that correct ?
I have always enjoyed attempting various jobs around the house , yet financial restrictions have prevented me from doing certain projects. Sadly my Grandmother recently passed away but she was kind enough to leave me a decent amount of money in her will. So instead of contemplating buying a Cardiff City season ticket , a Caribbean cruise , or a 50 inch 3D tv , all i could think was . . . . . . . . . Finally , i can now try and tile the bathroom.

I guess that makes me quite sad

I want to make sure that my bathroom project is done to the highest standard possible , and make sure i cover all bases and have everything properly planned and executed. Since i am literally a complete novice , i will have many questions for you guys over the following months.

Such as - which tools will i need to complete the job ? OR which tiles are best for the job ?

hi robert, yes that's the way you work out the walls. i would add more than 10% to be safe, you should be able to take any leftovers back. make sure the batch numbers are the same especially if you're buying from the big diy sheds. only you can choose what tiles you want, there's so many different tiles on the market now and vary so much in size. ceramics are the cheapest and easiest tiles to lay/fit and will suffice for the walls. for the floor i would advise porcelain as it's a lot stronger but is harder to cut. there are also natural stone, slate, marble etc but they will be more complicated to fit ( need sealing and possible weight issues) i would advise to ask questions before starting any work or purchasing any materials to ensure you do it right
