Evening all. I'm new to the forum (obviously! :smilewinkgrin🙂 and I'm a sparky not a tiler by trade. I tend to try and tackle all the jobs in my home so hopefully I may be able to offer some advice as my experience increases... I have a couple of questions that I've often wondered about:

1. If you use Silicon around the bath and in corners where walls join (to combat the effects of movement), why not use it everywhere? Surely then it's better than grout?

2. If I rip some of the paper from the plasterboard face when removing old tiles, should I remove any paper that's left or just go over it all with some kind of primer prior to re-tiling? The plasterboard is sound and has not been subjected to damp...

Cheers

Hello to you. :welcome:

Are you saying to Silicon tile joints instead of grouting??

completely impossible is what springs to mind, Silicon is there for movement joints as well as waterproofing, grout would crack in the corners and around the bath.

Hi Diamondtiling. Yes, I was asking whether it was possible to Silicon 'all' the tile joints instead of grouting...

That would take forever, it would be messy and smell for ages.
Grout is the only thing to use.

Thanks diamondtiling, I've already bought the grout - I was just wondering if it were possible... What are your thoughts on the plasterboard issue? I know it's cheap to buy but I would rather not change it.

If after ripping the tiles off the plasterboard you are left with a clean, workable surface then that only means one thing................the original tiler was not very good, usually we are left with holes and damage all over.
If it is ok then use an acrylic bond on the plasterboard. You should tank around the bath where the shower will be.
