How bad is too bad (with pic)

Hello

I have been removing tiles from my plasterboard stud par***ion walls. I now need to know if that is left after all the adhesive has been hacked off is sound enough to re-tile.

I have attached a pic which, hopefully, shows a section of wall and a closer-up detail of the surface.

As you will see, there are parts where the cardboard covering of the plasterboard has also come away.

My hope is that after sanding away all the loose bits of paper, and filling in the odd area where my chisel dug right into the plasterboard, it will be ok to re-tile onto this.

I'm hoping I won't have to re-board the walls.

I will be using 34x45cm tiles.

P.S. This forum obviously thinks "partishun" spelt properly has a rude word in it! Interestingly, it's happy with "stud".

If your skill levels are up to it you could always skim it with multi finish .

but if you do re-tile directly on it, you could do with making sure that any of the existing adhesive is grinded down a little or scraped off.

You could even just use some of the dot n dab type adhesive and fill the holes with that if you haven't got the skill/patience to skim it.

Is this a wet or dry area? as in shower/bathroom or cloakroom/kitchen?

I have been scraping ALL the adhesive off.

This is a bathroom job, but I have already removed the plasterboard in the shower alcove and replaced with aquaboard, and tanked.

The rest of the bathroom is where I'm hoping I will get away with removing the old tiles and adhesive and re-tile.

try and scrape most of the old glue off or use a sander ,then start tiling

if it was me id just use a bigger notched trowel, making sure to use a cement based adhesive

carry on tiling m8 ,i have tiled onto walls 10 times worse than that !!!

with gaz on the steamer get a long handle scraper and adh will peel off a treat dont leave it on to long tho! and if your thinking replastering dont forget to wait 4 week for it to cure (so scraping is prob a better option) walls look fine to me tile away son

Worked a treat. I just feel like a bit of a tit now for having done one wall without it.

The steamer was in the garage the whole time!
