Which method of spreading adhesive works best for you?

Do you prefer to spread adhesive on flat with flat end of a tiling trowel (or any end of plastering trowel) - perhaps working from a plastering hawk also - and THEN comb it off?

or do you prefer to load up notched end of a tiling trowel and spread and comb at the same time?

And which do you find is faster and easier on the arms?
