How far would you go...

How far would you travel to look at a job? Had one today 1 hours drive away...The job was to replace 30 cracked marble floor tiles, and clean & seal 90 sqm of marble floor tiles. Told them due to the distance i require a small payment to cover my costs of advice and test the floor to see the finish they wanted...I said it would be £70 to come out. They said that was fine...Just got back with £70.00 in my pocket. Im not prepared to travel this distance without a payment as i cant afford to be driving around the countyside for nothing anymore also it may cut out the time wasters.

Seems fair to me mate. I think its just down to how you feel at the time e.g. will it be worth doing for free or is it better to charge for the half day you will spend travelling and spending time advising and carrying out any evaluation work etc.

On a job I did, the customer had a local company come out and measure for a glass shower screen that had to be cut specially for the bathroom. The company charged a fee of £150 to visit and measure, that came off the bill if they got the job...which they did..

Must be 300 miles plus from me.

No i will send them a competitive estimate for the works...and i wont knock off the £70.00. You could knock it off if they go ahead if you want too.

I'm thinking of doing the same Andrew, that job I did in Scotland was round trip of 450 miles + extra 40 miles a day to the job (from where I was staying) I didn't charge for travelling time or diesel, but should've done I think

I regularly travel from herts to kent and use the Dartford tunnel which is £4 per day, its 65miles and takes 1hr and 15minutes each way no big deal in my opinion and we make good money on the jobs down there so I cant see a problem and wouldnt want to kill a golden goose by asking for travelling money I guess if it were just measures and pricing up i would have to question whether to put a £1-£2 on per m2 to cover this but its a regular customer who has a lot of work for us

I've travelled from Scotland to Kent twice to do work.

Travelled to Oxford just the other day to look at a job. Charged £140 although I did write up a report on why they were having the problems they are, all in all took around 6 hours so thought it justified and they had no problem paying it.

Got the job too but didn't knock it off the bill as the job was only worth £800, if it was more I would deduct from final invoice.
