Hi guys

Been asked to give a estimate to tile a veranda floor with uncalibrated Chinese slate averaging 15 mm thick (18 M2) And also been given a drawing as he wants a pattern. (Drawing attached) I think!!

Details on substrate,

The construction of the veranda is concrete beam and block to a depth of 150mm with a 65mm screed laid on top with all the suitable falls for good drainage. On top of this has been laid two skins of roofing grade asphalt to a further depth of 20mm to waterproof the whole area. On top the asphalt surface he has laid a sand and cement sceed to a thickness of 40/50mm (to accommodate the falls) in order to "insulate" the asphalt from temperature variations. So I would be effectively laying the tiles/slates onto concrete which has had 6 months to cure and harden.

I've never done slate before so I'm a little unsure what price to go in at, I know i have to seal before and after grouting and to use BAL PTB but, it's the working outside thats worrying me with the weather etc...

What sort of price per m2 would you be looking for and any tips on laying to the drawing?

Cheers

Laid some uncailbrated chinese slate a few weeks ago (Topps). Spread addy out, to lay several tiles at a time, when pressing some of the tiles into addy they would break, and the splinters would contaminate the addy. So ended up spreading for one tile at a time, very time consuming. In future I will be charging £50m2 plus.
As for pattern, I would part dry lay, working of smallest tile, to see how cuts workout. And start tiling, thats what i find works for me.

You will need a day to uncrate and sort it as well as wipe it down. The next 2 days will be for setting out and cutting so that leaves you a day to lay it and a day to grout and seal it. If you put in big days you might do it, but then you are chasing for the m2 rate you charge as well as extra addy (Uncalibrated needs alot more addy) say 3m2 to a bag if not less depends on how rough the stone is. Some of it will fall apart when you wet saw it so they will need to be re-cut. It will be interesting to see how you go, if you are happy with the price then go for it. I'm a long way away and my market is different to yours. My experience with slate can tell you you will be pushed very hard for those 5 days. It took you 5 days to lay some nice calibrated porcelain. This stone job will will have you reaching another skill level indeed.
