Don't you think that by always pricing according to meterage rates, it can kill a job? I mean a job like this should take no more than 3-4 days.

Personally I NEVER charge by the meter. I always view the job and try to go through all the ins and outs in my mind first. I never give a price on the spot. Come away and think it through - plan it and then I give a price based on my day rate (and how busy I am).

Priced him at £740 all in, his face dropped. "you having a laugh mate? no thx"

"how much was you expecting to pay?"

"about £300- £350"

"cya later mate, after you get your other quotes call me when you want it doing"

Things like that really pee me off:furious3: do people not realise that you gotta make a bloody living. I would be embarressed if i wasthat customer expecting that sort of job for £300 :mad2:

The funny thing is the house is on the same street where i did my first ever quote.
The woman wanted a 32sqm kitchen floor (still have notes of it in my book) in 600 x 300 porcelains. Floor needed leveling first, gave a price of £450 (didnt know i had just started out :) ) and she said she was going to report me to trading standards as i was trying to rip her off. Seen the house before and it was still a wreck, has a piece of A4 paper in the window saying: "For Sale, Tel: blah blah blah"

£300-350? That's about what a 3m2 splashback goes for over here (inc. mats, but mind you, everything is a bit more expensive over here)

I took a look at a basement belonging to a relative the other week. He wants me to rip out the floor and furbish one of the rooms as a "relax room". I surveyed it, took some notes, etc, and started counting. I'm going to price the work part real cheap, as it's family, but it's not going to be cheap anyways, because just the materials for prepping the substrate, and fixing and grouting the the tiles, are going to cost more than £3000. If he goes for relatively cheap tiles of medium quality, the cost of the tiles is going to be atleast around there as well.

And that's just the tiling. Then there's ripping out asbestos, which I refuse to do, plumbing, electricity.... It's a laaarge and ooold basement...

When I told him the numbers, he looked like this: :47:

It's funny. People look at the flyers from the big construction supply chains, and think "Ooh, pwetty tiles, a tenner a sqm, that's like... Erm... A few tenners for a fresh bathroom!!1".
