Dear All

We have a bad tiling job above hot water underfloor heating which needs lifting and replacing. There is currently 1inch chipboard above the heating pipes. All needs ripping up and replacing with a something suitable. There are 2 large rectangular rooms, a hallway a small separate toilet and bathroom (floor and walls need doing in bathroom), it's approximately 90m2 in total. Toilets x2, sink and large shower cubicle will need to be tiled around/moved to enable tiling (or however you do it!). We would supply tiles, Tiler would supply everything else.

We've had some quotes, two come in at similar amounts and one is double the price and seems expensive! I wondered if some of you would be kind enough to give me an idea as to what this forum would quote me so I can see if this 'expensive' one really is over the top or if the others are just very cheap. I'd also like to know what you'd use under the tiles - i.e. chipboard, ply, fancy backing board etc. Anything I haven't mentioned that you'd need to know, just ask! Thanks very much for all your help!

Squirrel.

Where abouts in the country are you?

The reason I ask is that Dave and others on this forum will, if you like, find a tiler for you, if you're worried about getting a good job done.

As you now know, there are good and bad tilers. This site promotes good tiling. A lot of good tilers are short of work at the moment, and it doesn't seem right that bad tilers are coming in and taking work whilst this is the case.

Hi Guys

All quotes were taken from a trusted tradesman site off the net and all have references. We are happy with the people who we have had round so aren't really looking for anyone else. The firm who quoted the most money, seemed to really know what he was talking about although he hadn't experience in hot water UFH, but had done electric once. Just seems alot of money when he's quoted us double the price from the others that still seemed perfectly competent but perhaps instill us with as much confidence - mainly because they just didn't talk as much as he did about exactly how he'd do it? Just wanted to see what you all thought and what you'd charge. I understand it's difficult to quote without seeing the job.

Thanks, Squirrel

A guestimate is all I'm after, as the quotes I've got are so massively different I am just after ball park figures to get some ressurance as to who's a fair quote. Would I be talking roughly 3k, 5k, 7k, 10k, 15k? Tiles are porcelain and will be a mixture of 30 x 30, 60 x 60 & 30 x 60 (probably), none of the Tiler's who've quoted have actually asked! Not sure that's a good sign!

Thanks!

I would insist on seeing the job and the tiles before quoting.
We also would need to know where in the country you are.

Any tiler who fails to ask about the tile sizes is, in my opinion, either SO good he doesn't need to be concerned, or SO unconcerned that you should be VERY concerned!!! (did that make sense?!)

Also, I would have expected an "experienced" tiler to have tackled more than one underfloor heating job, electric of piped.

I an sorry but we are not going to give any prices openly on this forum with out any of our fixers seeing the job first.....if you have a tile fixer arranged then you need to work out what price is suitable for you to pay.....we cannot possibly quote on your tiling without viewing the job.....

thread closed....

please pm me direct if need further assistance or a tile fixer...
