I always use powdered Mapei slow
set on walls because of this exact problem. Bucket gear is fine on plastered platerboard etc, but on old houses etc, I use the powder. But then you have to remember to use a good acrylic bond, like nicobond, ardex, as the powder gear could come off.

There is bucket gear with built in bond, but the troble with bucket gear is you can only use a 6mm trowel. Powder gear you can go thicker in some areas.

Is it not suitable to use a 10mm depth trowel with tubbed stuff ??? I didn't know that.

I'm making a bit of an assumption here and hopefully Fred will expand on his statement later but you might find it has to do with the thickness of the bed for tubbed gear. A 10mm trowel will give quite a thick bed. There is the possibilty that the adhesive won't dry out properly as it is not generally cement based, especially if large format tiles are being fixed, and dries through evaporation not chemical reaction like cementitious products.

Thats the only reason I could think of. The experienced guys will come back later I am sure, with perfectly logical reasons if they agree with Freds statement.
