Hi,
I'm looking for some advice on how to finish between a hardwood door threshold and a ceramic tile in a bathroom.

My grout spacing is 5mm but the spacing left is about 10mm between tile and threshold - i'll heard you can get a silicon type product to do this...

Or should just grout this??

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

I always start my tiling from the door threshold when setting out, so i don't have a big gap at the end, don't use grout it will crack use Silicon.

Aye, or you can see to that there isn't a gap there at all when planing the layout. Then you remove the threshold and tile under where it's supposed to be. Then you finish off by fitting a new one which compensates for the change of level. No Silicon which gets dirty, and no cracking grout either.

never start from a door in case its not square and cuts crap opposite. Centre as usual and hey presto no gaps anywhere.

Aye, but you still need to keep the threshold in mind when you centre, as it might be a bit receded compared to the walls. I did that misstake once when I did my apprenticeship; measured, and yay! Full tiles all the way. Drew my lines, started tiling, and when I got the the threshold, there was a 2cm gap :mad2:

I layed 70m2 of a 3 sizes porcelain last wk running through 4 rooms and worked out every cut,at all doors, walls stairs etc and it all fell in sweetly,
it's so important to know what your cuts are.

Good work Joe, I must admit when i have a pattern running into a couple of rooms i check all the main cuts and the ones i dont check i usually wouldnt mind if there was a sliver. There is usually a bad cut somewhere with different size tiles and you have to decide what are the most important cuts!

U still as busy, ive got a few months infront now which is nice.

I do the same as enduro, i find the centre of a door frame and either put the centre of a tile on the line or a tile on either side depending where the rest of the full tiles will end up, letting me also know how big the cuts are, i dont bother doing floors on 1 day anymore, i just go there sheet it if needed then put the full tiles down 1st, then goto another job and do a kitchen for example, then on the 2nd day go back and get perfect cuts around the edges because the tiles are solid and dont move so i get true measurments and spaces around the edges identical, i find it makes my life easier and more relaxed if i go back on the 2nd day and do the edges, the customers are ALWAYS happy with my jobs and prices so im happy too, im never going to be a millionaire tiling so why bust my arse trying to be one, im not in debt so i dont need to bust thousands every month lol

you should always put a cover plate or a stopend where tiles meet wood or carpet

i always do, i put a line from the front of the door frame (if the door was shut and your in the room and look down you can see where the tiles end) then i goto the timber yard and get oak/teak/red wood made up and rounded off on one side screw it between the tiles and the back end of the door frame, i dont charge for this as its inexpensive and customers like some things for free, the threshold bars are only £2-6 depending on wood, its not going to break the bank but these silly small things get recommendations
