How To Remove Tiles/screed/cement Which Has Been Laid On Top Of Victorian Hearth Tiles?

In the course of getting my living room floor restored, I've discovered that underneath the boring old terracotta tiles on the fireplace hearth are some attractive patterned Victorian tiles. However the terracotta tiles have been fixed on top of them, with what looks like cement. Is it possible to remove this without damaging the tiles underneath? Thanks.

If you tap the terracotta tiles and it feels solid could be a tough call but as it's just a fire place hearth could you not get them replaced with new.

There are some chemicals that will dislodge the adhesive or cement from your terracotta tiles. Patience and perseverance is the answer!
