I dont think you will have any problems tiling over them if they are solid, I would still remove though, for all the work it wll take!!

Charlie if he gets a SDS and rips them up + causes massive vibration to the floor + knocking ceiling down below + causing structural damage to floor/building, it is quite a bit more work than tiling 4 or 5 m2 of tiling.
If they are that solid, and most folk on here have had jobs like this, prep it right it will be fine

that's quite an extreme sequence events wilder!!!
i cant see him causing massive damage to building tbh. I've yet to come across a floor that I've struggled to get up easily using sds and correct technique. But as i said earlier, provided they are sound then no problem to tile over! Id still be inclined to attempt removal though!

Dave he said they are solid, im sure he has tried this method ?

how do you know?
he might have just jumped on them or something, it would not be the first time,
also thats pretty extreme pulling those tiles up to cause that much damage, is he using a digger to do it

what are the tiles fixed to? you say its on the first floor, is it fixed to wood, or is it an appartment and fixed to cement.....how flexable is the floor?, if its wood did they line the floor with cement boards, ply or tile stright on the floor boards..? i would try lift a few first, find out whats going on...

Couldn't get the digger upstairs, they're a bit like daleks

Take one up, see what the condition of the substrate is and make a judgement from there. Ideally they should come up and then you know when you tile it, it's done correctly from scratch.

He has said its on a solid base, a solid base is a solid base in building trade jargon, not a timber base.
although which has been pointed out im not positive , he has tried to knock one up not just 'jump up and down on them', looking at his previous work he is a bit more of a tradesman than that.
If they are easy to get up take em up, if they are solid ie come up in ikkle mm chunks with a bolster or if you have guns like a girl use a sds 😉 leave the thing and tile over, its a that simple really
