Quick question, is chipboard that bad a floor substrate to tile on? I'll be doing someone's en suite floor in a couple of weeks and they have chipboard down at the moment. I would like to put ply or backerboard over it but I think it'll raise the floor level higher than that of the bedrooms. Other than taking the chipboard up is there any other way around this?

charlie1, don't fancy doing that lol cheers anyway.

prceramics, the floors pretty straight and pretty stable. How thick is the adhesive and ditra likely to be if I use it? I know you've got the adhesive, then the ditra, more adhesive and tile...do you know the minimum thickness I could get away with? Cheers.

How is chipboard stable ?

You could trim the joists to allow

Sorry, and really don't want to cause an arguement but i would not suggest this at all. Joists are installed/used to a particular grade, standard and dimension for a reason. Much the same as there's standards for what weight you can put on a wall when tiling, there's standards and regulations for sufficient support from joists.

Take the chipboard up, replace with WBP ply, 18mm in thickness, overboard with 6mm cementboard as suggested and tile. This will be around an 8-10mm height difference. No biggy, but as an en-suite adjoining a bedroom that is presumeably carpeted i wouldn't expect this method would bring the floor of your en-suite abover carpet and underlay.

No carpet, wooden flooring in the bedroom.

Question for the forum, what's more time consuming, laying ditra or backerboard? Also, the area to be tiled is small, 3 m2 max and around a corner, so would the chipboard be ok leave?
