I replaced yet another floor couple weeks back that had been tiled straight onto chipboard. Even the fact that elastromatic adhesive was used there were still cracks on tiles. All removed, 6mm hardie glued and screwed and retiled, guaranteed! We can only give you good advice.

I appreciate the advice, if it was up to me I'd take the chipboard out, but it isn't up to me.

It looks like it's going to be either backerboard or ditra over the chipboard.

Quick question, is chipboard that bad a floor substrate to tile on? I'll be doing someone's en suite floor in a couple of weeks and they have chipboard down at the moment. I would like to put ply or backerboard over it but I think it'll raise the floor level higher than that of the bedrooms. Other than taking the chipboard up is there any other way around this?
.

I find the best thing to do in this situation is stick schluter distract mat down over the top using Mapei Kerraquick grey and Latex plus ( flexible additive ). I've never had a failure. I know it's more expensive than other flexible adhesive, but it's bullet proof. It'll only raise the floor by 3 or 4mm.
