i think its definitely worth it....

we get to make our own decisions, even the bad ones ;0)
all the money we make is ours, not an employers.
and it takes a certain type of person to be self employed..

so if things are tough right now and anybody needs a pep talk, (we all do sometimes!) then watch this video and remind yourself that if things get tougher, so will you..

Ive been hard at it for nearly 43 years now, went self employed in 1980,the 80s was the best time earn a lot more than now but have starting to slow up,stopped doing big site work just plod doing smaller jobs, its nice to take a day off now and again getting out to fish knowing you have not got to answer to any one, that's best part of being self employed.

Ahh, being self employed. Lots of tea breaks, chatting to your colleagues, making phonecalls on your customers phone, surfing the internet on your customers computer, paid holidays, sick pay, half day Fridays, being paid whilst you are travelling to meetings, staying in nice hotels whilst on business, meal allowance whilst working overnight, health insurance, leaving work early when things go quiet, paid Xmas parties, overtime, time off in lieu, double time on Bank holidays, paying into the company share scheme, getting home at a reasonable time each evening, getting home clean every evening, having your wage paid into your bank account at the same time every month, not having to work out your income for the tax year. These are the things I do not get, being self employed, but these are the things that I used to get being employed.

The only thing I did not get was ‘Job satisfaction’. I get that now, but it does come at a cost. The cost is hard work, effort and less pay, but I am happier doing what I am doing now. It is very tough out there and sometimes you have to rely on luck to get by. I know I have done a days work and it is very satisfying.

Self-employed is the only way to be , imho.

There are many reasons good and a few bad but to name a couple.

1. We are in a downturn, being SE gives you the opportunity to work 7 6 5 4 3 2 or 1 day a week on any day you choose. TRUE flexibilty to cope with hard times , try and find that with a PAYE job.

2. When you retire , you have the skills to top up your pension provisions by doing say a floor or bathroom once a week/fortnight. Imagine 40 years working in retail , what are you going to do then when you run out of cash during retirement and a part time job is only going to get you min wage probably.

I could go on but it's the only way for me.

By the way the SE on here make sure you check out the new single tier pension set up , for once , it actually pays to be SE.

Cheers

I sometimes feel its not worth it but then I think, I love it and get paid for it. Sme people spend hundreds every year on golf... This is like my golf and I get paid to do it! It's a no brainier that you should do what you love, if everyone did what they had a passion for then the world would be a better place. Having said that, there can be a fine line between love and hate I suppose.

I would like to think that would be the way of things in another 20yrs(body willing), but I can't help but feel when that time does actually come that my thought will be REMOVED it I'm sick of the sight of tiling!

Look at all these poor people in jobs they hate like factories, shops, taxis, whatever... They get paid 16-25g a year for doing a repetitive job, they might not have the same worries or stress as the self employed but the need to switch there brain off for 30% of there life, they are just robots, you could pay my 40 g per year and it still wouldn't be enough to do a job like that!!
