Discuss Is my tiling acceptable? in the Canada Tile Advice area at TilersForums.com.

Hi.... I have recently had my bathroom refitted and tiled floor to ceiling. The company tell me the tile does not cut cleanly and they have now covered the chips around the window with a stick on trim which does cover the mess, but should I accept this? The tiles used are Nest white glazed ceramic by Love, we have not been able to take a tile to someone else to see how they cut as the tiler took all our spare tiles with him! Also we have a small gap around the door frame that they said was too narrow to tile so nailed a piece of wood in the gap and said when painted the same colour as the door frame it will look fine, is this acceptable or should they have removed the door architrave? Also the boxing in of the pipes is rough and one of the pipes is not covered. See pictures. Many thanks for advice regarding these issues. Jayne

Thank you for your much appreciated and quick response. We are have a nightmare with them, when we tell them we have asked for second opinions, they just question the other companies knowledge on tiling, that’s why I thought I’d try and get expert advice on this forum.
Maybe you could ask them what their knowledge of tiling is and ask them wether their tiler holds an nvq or city guilds in tiling , I know many on here don't so don't have a go , but I am just throwing the ball back at them with their dismissive comment .

Jayne,

Do you have 2 windows in your bathroom? Or is that the stick on trim on the 6th picture?

I have never heard of ‘stick on trim’.

The trim around the boxed in section is appalling. This need to be redone. It would have been better to box the pipe in and have a removable panel.

I would not have removed the architrave around your door, but I would have tiled ‘slithers’ of tile (even if it had taken me an hour to cut them).

If the person doing the tiling could not cut a tile with an acceptable finish then he should have stopped and informed you.

If you had purchased the tiles they belong to you the company has no right removing the spares (if there were any left over).

Your grout colour has highlighted all the dodgy cuts in your tiles. The grout colour could be lightened by the use of a grout colourant (Universeal grout rescue). Have a look on ebay.

Yes the 6th picture is the stick on trip. Thank you for your advice, they were starting to make me think it’s me being picky

Not good job mate don’t pay till you are happy with the job
They have unfortunately had £6000 off us, as they were doing our main bathroom and clock room, but we have not let them do the clock room following the problems with the bathroom. We just don’t know where to go with this, they make me feel I’m looking for problems 😔

I’ll ask them, thank you. Worth a try

This is the long awaited reply I have received from the company “The issue regarding the tiles being chipped has been gone over numerous times and as we stated before, it was unavoidable. So we advised only option was for L-Shape trims to be placed over the tile as is often common practice. I’m very happy with the finish”. Any suggestions on how I respond to this? Is it common practice, could this poor result be avoided? Thank you Jayne

It's not common practice. In fact it only happens when the original work is sub standard and I've only ever seen it on bad commercial work when sharp edges have been left exposed.
That work is terrible. No excuses unless a paltry budget has been worked to which doesn't seem to be the case.
Is this a nation or local firm? Knowing which would dictate how I'd proceed from here.

Awful job , did the same person do all the work , doesn’t look like a proper tiler has done that . I’d be asking to see proof he is a tiler and not a jack is all trades master of none
This is happening all the time and it doesn’t do the tiling industry any good at all .

It’s a local tiling and bathroom company, who have a small shop with displays, they are a family run company who advertise that they have been there for 50 years
