ALSO WHAT KINDA MIXER U USE, AS I HAVENT GOT ANYTHING YET AND TO BE HONEST DON’T HAVE A CLUE WHAT TO USE, THINKING IT’S A WHISK WHAT FITS INTO THE END OF A DRILL? COULD I JUST DO IT BY HAND JUST AS A ONE OFF DO U THINK

Buckets I used to use were old ready-mixed adhesive buckets most of the time. It can be handy to get a mixing bucket from an adhesive manufacturer though (via a tile store usually) as when you're mixing leveling compounds and such-like it has the water levels marked on the bucket for you.

The 'whisk' or padle mixer usually does just fit in a drill. Although you can also get paddle mixers which are dedicated mixing machines which have a decent speed control setting or trigger and good handles for those thick mixes (to stop it spinning out of your hands).

Obviously the bags of adhesive will always say how much water is needed or if a bottle of polymer/admix is required etc.

I always start with a bit of water in the bottom of the bucket and mix a little adhesive before adding lots more water and more powder to ge the required amount... seems to get less lumps, maybe its just an old habbit though. Aways mix less than you need and add to it, as you can never mix too much and take some back as they say.

Depends how big the floor is and if your going to be doing many. If it's a big floor or your going to be doing more floors I would definitely get an adhesive mixer, if this is a one off then just a mixing paddle in your drill will do. The reason I say this is because you will just burn your drills out mixing loads of floor adhesive. Any bucket will do really but I like the gorilla tubs.

Used a piece 2”x1” for 18 years in a adhesive tub no problems its still quicker than whisk but harder work & 10 kg is about as much as your back can take as with my whisk 30 – 40 kg at the time but then you need 2 guys to lift the bucket don’t buy a whisk unless you start laying large floors spend the money on a couple of pints when you finish the job

hi mate use a bucket and pour the water in first upto your index finger knukle then add your adhesive till thick enough it just slides of your trowel

Gorilla tubs are very good for mixing adhesives, though I never use one "as yet anyway" as they are very flexible and are very easy to clean out even dried on adhesives, unlike solid plastic tubbs.
Not strictly true about being easy to clean. First time use of a brand new gorilla tub was for mixing Ardex 7001 floor addy. When finished laying floor, I let the rest go off so that I could knock it out into the bin. This was the next morning. Main bulk came out with a bit of banging and flexing of bucket, but the residue up the side stuck like sh!t to a blanket and is still there today. Flexing the bucket when the addy is a thin coating just bends the very flexible addy.

Much easier to clean if you do it while it is still active - ish. Said bucket is now only used as a waste bucket.:icon9:

I bought a cheap drill wheni first started tiling cost me £20 and i already had a mixing paddle the drill lasted 12months because it couldnt take it when the floor addy was thicker it just burnt out on me half way through a mix so had to get the cordless out. The very same night when i had finished the job i went down to screwfix which is very local to my house and bought this Sparky BM2 1060CE+ Mixer 230V 1050W - Screwfix.com, Where the Trade Buys (hope the link works)

Which i found is a good piece of kit for the price especially if you way up the cost of buying a drill every 12 months..

Also i use wickes black buckets for smaller flooring jobs and medium sized gorrilla tubs for larger jobs.
p.s The handles always fall off the orange B&Q buckets thats y i only use wickes for the same price..
Cheers
Mat
