Keen DIYer but hesitant tiler!

Hi everyone. I've been looking at previous threads and got some useful tips but thought I'd take the plunge and join.

At the moment I'm tiling an alcove which will eventually contain a WC and the two end walls are not flat. If I hold a straight edge across each wall the centre is "dipped" 6 to 10mm. Bearing in mind the walls are only about 900mm across, the dip is quite obvious. I was therefore going to plaster the "dipped area" and then when it's dry, coat the whole wall with a 10% PVA mix before fitting 150mm square ceramic wall tiles - nothing fancy. Does this sound okay?

Hello mate and welcome to the forum.

First things first, dont use PVA at anytime during tiling, it is horrid stuff (do a search on PVA as a primer and you will see what I mean). You need an acrylic primer. What adhesive are you planning to use? If you use a cement based adhesive, you will most likely be able to get over this with the adhesive as most have a max depth of 10-12mm.

I would float the walls out with rapid set to make them as flat as possible..

Thanks for the quick responses lads, especially the dire warnings and useful info re PVA. I have ready mix adhesive for the wall tiles and a cement-based adhesive for the floor tiles. I do have some acrylic primer (Mapei Primer G) that I was going to use on the ply floor - can I use this on the walls as well?

Welcome along, as already mentioned, use a cement based adhesive to get rid of your dip and then prime and tile when that has dried.

Oh forgot to ask, is the wall plastered at the moment? If it is I'd advise priming before fixing the dip. And the primer you have is fine for the walls.

The walls are old but sound plaster, but in a few places near the ceiling there is vinyl emulsion on the plaster which I was going to sand off. I'm glad the primer's okay.

I'll keep you all posted with progress!
