Doing a kitchen floor at the mo and tomorrow i need to tile under the "island" well when i say island it is basically a worktop coming out and propped up with a big thick silver hollow pole. Problem is that the pole needs cutting, never done one before. I can slide a tile under the pole but the worktop raises, do i just cut with an hacksaw or tell the customer to give the kitchen fitters a ring?

Usually Pen, the leg has adjustable foot you wind up, if this is already at lowest point, then take leg off and prop with 2x1....then undo the allan keys and cut off the thickness of the tile + addy from the top of pole and re fix....never cut bottom off because plastic threaded screw adjuster sits inside it. If your cut is a bit raggety, it is hidden under the table.....Gaz

If it is the type with an adjustable foot...and the foots wound right in, then cut a bit more off than you need.. you will be able to adjust the foot to get it right ..just incase the floor level is out more than you thought...

I'm in same situation over next couples of days!!! plastic foot is just about at its limit, customer showed me it and started flexing work top but i said don't think tile with adhesive will go under, just hope i dont cut the thing too short lol ( that sort of thing wakes me up in the middle of the night!! stood there with the thing cut in two ha ha)

If you do accidently cut short, :whatchutalkingabout Wickes sell them for about £14.

Not the end of the world
