kitchen quote

I agree with you all not all jobs can be quoted for on a m2 rate but come on guys unless tour talking about mosaic 100x 100 tiles aint that different to 150x150 its only 6m2 any tiler new or veteran should be able to do this in a day ..ok a day fixing and 1/2 day to grout and finish but any more than that is taking the biscuit. and yes for 3m2 of 100x100 i would charge 75 plus matts be done for dinner and onto the next one. but thats just me. because i think thats all that job is worth but that is for ceramic only stone is diff coz of sealing etc..And as for the sockets we all know theres sockets in every kitchen and there a damn site easier to cut round using 100x100 than any other tile so thats not a factor.

Kilty just this week tiled two half tiled ceramic 100x100 9m2 kitchens thats 18m2 100x100 plus extras in bathroom 2m2(not 100x100)and 4m2 bath floor on screed it took 2 1/2 days £600 plus matts how much money do you want to make? like i said i wasnt being harsh just realistic speed comes with time and experience im 25 years in and just believe that customers shouldnt be overcharged for the tilers lack of speed and if fixers cant make that type of tile pay then dont take them on. but hey were all different at the end of the day price what your all happy with if you get the jobs great... andalso got six more kiitchen from those two same guy.

Know the problem, I am OK on pricing floors but have problems with kitchens and bathrooms, I either seem to over or under estimate. Assuming the walls are good and there aren't loads of sockets I would guestimate 2 days. I use the same hourly/day rate as you. Shouldn't slow you down using two different coloured tiles.

I've done a similar sized kitchen in a random 4 colour & that took me 2 days in total, but just needed some ideas of whether or not my pricing was competitive because as mentioned £300 for this kitchen is over £50 a metre which does seem like alot but there is a bit more setting out on this job & I can't see me getting it all finished in less than 2 days.

Thanks for you input everyone, it has made it a bit clearer to me.

Still not completely sure about how to price this one so if anyone else has any advice that'd be appreciated but I guess at the moment I'd rather go in a bit lower as Its my first year of working for myself so I'm after all the recommendations from customers I can get (So far all my private customers have been really happy with my quality of work and
tidiness, but i don't really want to be charging to much due to me being a bit slow.

Cheers all

Mathew i dont mean to sound harsh so if thats how it sounds i apologise to you,
All i am trying to say is a customer shouldnt have to suffer the cost because you may be to slow at the moment to make it pay at that timescale if you explain to the customer that it will take that amount of time and they are happy with it then thats fine. But you dont want to lose recomendations for overpricing a break even job at ths time may lead to a bigger job next time that you can pull your loss back from. And dont ever feel you have to compromise finish for speed it will come. so price the job with what you feel comfortable with earning ,No one can tell you what to charge to win the job the prices i mentioned are what i am comfortable with i make money and the customer gets a job done at a competitive price for this area.

And on another note GRUMPY GROUTER yes it does take longer to tile with100x100 than 200x200 but if thts your logic do you charge less for 300x300 than you would for 200x200?

No smurf thanks for your opinion. I realise what your saying which is the main reason for me starting this thread I'm just trying to get some kind of idea of whether my prices are too steep or not enough.

I charge kitchens and bathrooms on day rate. As yet not been asked to put 300x300 on to the kitchen walls. Most of my work is small scale and rarely is of benefit for me to charge at a metre rate. I charge the number of days that I think it should take, if I over run, which I quite often do for various reasons, I absorb the extra time at my own expense. So following your question, if I was fixing 300x300 instead of 200x200 and it would take me less time, then yes I would charge less.

Thankyou for the response grumpy but it does seem to me looking back through all threads and posts i have made that you do like to contradict me or chastize my input although i am a tiler i still have feelings.....:bigcry:

Sorry you feel that way smurf, though I don't recall chastizing or contradicting you, I was mearly asking questions about some of your responses for my own clarification. Each tiler has his/her own methods and ways, and each tiler will work at a different speed. I am quite new to the trade and am very keen to learn as much as I can. I can only do this by asking questions and getting experience. I am not the fastest tiler in the world, nor will I ever be, as that is just the way I am, but I try to do the best job I can. Most of my work comes by way of referrals now so my pricing can not be too far out otherwise I wouldn't get the contacts. Wasn't contradicting nor chastising, but i do know that sometimes I can write things that can be misinterpreted, but that is not intentional.

Matthew, I'm tiling a kitchen tomorrow. The same layout as the one you are quoting for. It's 5sqm and it's 4 boxes of white and one box of brown tiles. I'm doing it for £250 inc mats & trim. I expect it to take 2 days. However, my days are usually very long (typically 10+ hours). I am now into month 16 of being a tiler and I price a job based on what a 'time served' tiler would charge. i.e. if I think a time served tiler would tile a room in 2 days I would charge 2 days, but it may take me 3 or 4 days. Saying that, I am getting faster and faster each job I take on. There are plenty of threads on here regarding pricing and how long jobs should take. Good luck. Sean

Some interesting points, from both sides. I have a question or 2 for the 'faster' fixers, lets say you the OP's splashback, break down your fixing / finishing time in days and events, not asking for an hourly breakdown, just what you would hope to accomplish by the end of days 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 ......... etc
Thanks.
