large format mosaics

Seen a job, large format tiles with large format mosaics, them being 12" x12" sq. They are not the same thickness as the tiles. Would I'd be right in saying make a notched piece of ply to the depth of the said mosaics and tap them in as per usual? Its freaked me out the size, but surely the same principle?
