laying slate tiles

hello again, about to lay slate tiles on vinyl tiles (which are sound) and have been told to soak the slate first before laying, is this right?

Depends on the thinset ur using.
If ur laying on vinyl tile i highley recomend giving them a scuff .

the vinyl tiles are laid on the old council tiles which seems to be on or laid with bitimin i
(its black) the adhesive i'm going to use is going to be a flexible one , as the the slate im not sure which type it is but i bought it from tile giant and are 10mm thick with grooves on the underside

I would just wipe the backs of the tile with a damp sponge to clean the residue off but i wouldnt be tiling to vinyl.

You can hire a machine to remove the tiles. I have lost count of the times clients have said to me that the vinyl tiles are stuck fast and cant be removed only to get there and remove them in minutes once you know how.
On the downside remember some of these tiles contain asbestos.

You can tile to vinyl if you have to, just have to use the proper adhesive.
like i said before give them a scuff to ensure the adhesive gets a good key.

If you want to remove the vinyl , go and hire a vinyl remover, u could be up for a big job tho, cause then u have to ensure the vinyl glue is removed as well.

A heat gunworks wonders on vinyl tiles....Also a slurry coat gives a great bond for tile adhesive if you can't get them up..

thanks guys, the tiles are laid over bitumen which concerns me ! the area i'm tiling is 1700 mm x 1800 mm and 860 mm x 820 mm so any kind of kit to strip the floor bearing in mind it's a bathroom is going to be a squeeze, what type of slurry do you mean Dave? and how do i do it ?

Slurry coat......A mixture of SBR and portland cement, mixed to get quite wet and brushed on , this creates a very strong bond between the substrate and the adhesive..

thanks Dave that sounds like a really good idea sorry for my ignorance but do i let the slurry harden then lay slate the next day or do i lay them over it wet or when tacky ? once again many thanks

if you cant remove the tiles, as far as i am aware Mapei latex plus and keraquick over solid vinyl will work, and even if they just reccomend keraquick i would still use the latex plus as it gives an extra grab to dence materials such as slate!
