been doing a bit of research over the last 6 to 8 weeks on different courses available, and everyone on the forum seems to point me towards NETT..my only concern is, after such a short course can i reasonably expect to be competent enough to start tiling as a profession?..

baring in mind, i have no tiling or building experience at all, and this would be a complete change of direction..previously worked in I.T..and really dont enjoy it..

all responses would be appreciated..

many thanks

Cant stress enough that this course is great. Darren the trainer really knows his stuff. However you have to 'listen'. Its a case of heres what you do - now go and do it.

You can spend a fortune on courses that dont teach you half of what he does.

Other courses will have you stickiing tiles onto walls all the time but wont actually teach you all the other stuff.

How to make a certain cut, how to avoid a certain problem. Darren also goes into the business side of things. how to quote, how to measyre, what you need to start up, how to advertise etc.

As for tiling you will tile a simulated bathroom wall with sink and bath as well as a window. But its the other stuff this guy teaches you that really makes this course worth every penny and more.

I work in IT as well, have done some tiling too, at home etc. If you have a bit of DIY savvy and are practically minded you can learn everything you need to go out and quote.

I went out yesterday and quoted on a bathroom and everything I learned on the course came to fruition. All the background prep, how to qualify your price etc. Telling the customer what you have to do and why the price is the way it is.

Mate do this course. You cant go wrong. You willlearn enough to be competent and confident. The rest well thats just practice and practice. You will have enough knowledge to do it. Just remember your first jobs will be slower until you gain practical exp.

Best of luck.

I can identify with that, I did a 4 week course and spent a lot of time sticking tiles on walls! Ok, I now know I can do brick bond , diamond set, mosaics, big tiles, small tiles... all akward cuts etc...

But we didn't learn a lot of other stuff (which I have learnt now) which would have been a lot more useful to know and practice than repeating the same task 3-4 times.

I'm talking about things like tanking, silcone, surface prep / priming... underfloor heating, natural stone & how to lay/seal etc etc etc... I don't know if the 4 day course you guys are talking about covers this - But I would definately recommend you find one that does!

I did the 4 day course then the 1 day course as all their 5 day courses were booked well in advance, you do learn alot about natural stone on the one day and the moneys alot better.I had to travel for 3 hours to get there, was doing over a ton the whole way,I was going that fast that I thought I would end up goin back in time like Marty McFly.

I assume you travelled on a train then....

It would be a 220mile trip for me from coventry, going up the m1? right past / through, leicester, nottingham, sheffield, leeds, m... ugh, you get the idea....lovely journey

never used the m1 before? Probably full of speed cameras too!
