Hello all my tiling buddies,
My helper is 16, leaving school now so he's booked onto a course which lasts two years(at a technical college),2-3 days a week! probably NVQ.
Anyway for him to officially join me i'm to have public liability insurance(no prob there) and Employers insurance !!! (what i said!!!! ) this would cost me a lot i'm told.
Make sense to anyone? I'm a sole trader, not an employer so why the hell should i do get this??

Just started my son with me as a trainee thro leeds building college had meeting with representative from college Friday ,you have to have emloyers cover hes also 16 , he cant be classed as a subcontractor , your responsible for training .health and safety every thing , but you can also claim over £5000 over the period of training.

Thanks lads for the responses,
my helper is my son too Bal,seems to be same situation as yourself then.
You say i can claim over 5k over the period of training? how? i know that by losing him 2-3 days a week i'l loose more than that for sure over the months on course! lol.
I'v had no quotes in yet, what would be a reasonable quote for the employers insurance?? not that i have employees!!

Ive added my lad onto employers liability insurance thro the same company that ive got my public liability £ 75 up to my next renual date which off top of my head is about 8 months away so £75 not a full year so about £100 give or take a few quid , theres plenty of firms around, by the way you must register with CITB to get the grants .

I've my cousins lad with me 'till he starts serving his time at the plumbing:furious3::furious3:.

The site im on need PL insurance but when i mentioned bringing some help the foreman wasnt bothered. To keep myself right i know i need employers as well.
Is there no way you can get round it by him registering as self employed....maybe thats even more of a can of worms.

Having a gofor really helps, ive almost doubled my meterage and my costs definitely havent went up too much so its worth it lads.£££££££

If you are paying him then you must register as an Employer with HMRC and also comply with the regulations laid down in the Working Time Directive. Sadly this will encompass all sorts of stuff like National Minimum Wage, holiday pay, sick pay, paternity pay ( when that becomes relevant:grin:) etc. etc.

You will need the 5 grand in grants to make it all worthwhile...........

Thanks grumpy,i don't want to be an employer.
It seems to be compulsory to have employers insurance with liability to take one of these lads from a college!! maybe i should drop it all.
These lads don't expect pay or the benefits of employment, just the experience seemingly!! .

Thought it was your lad hillhead that you were taking on ? you cant deny him a qualification cos of a bit of paper work , its not as if hes gunna run to tax office and take you to an industrial court trial , i think your working relationship will be a bit more relaxed and less pressured than if it was trainee you didnt know .
