dan-u-fix-it?

Hi There

I wish to tile a hallway in a victorian house. The current subfloor is floorboard but I would like to remove these and replace with something thinner in order to have the finished floor level as close as possible to the existing floor level. The reason for this is that the rooms coming off of the hallway are to be sanded.

Is there any product on the market for achieving a sound and strong surface for tiling that can be fixed directly to the joists but has a very low profile?

Can anyone help?

Hi

Thank you for the responses -

Paul, I don't think we will be laying concrete but thanks anyway.

Dave - The floorboards are 18mm as Mike says. To add to the problem we are sanding the floorboards in the other areas so this will take off another couple of mm's. I know we can lift the floorboards and replace with 18mm chipboard or ply but I was just wondering if there was any magical product on the market that could do this for say 10 or 12mm to give us 5mm or so tolerance. I know that probably wouldn't give us enough to make the tiled floor level with the wood but it might make it a bit closer.

I think we may have to scrap the idea of tiling the hall or lay a new floor in the living room and bedroom, carpet or wood planks.
