Hi all,,
Been asked to make a bath panel, and tile it.
I was thinking of making a frame around the bath, then screwing some ply or plasterboard to it and then then tile it.
I Was also thinking of using mirror screws.Do you think its best to use plasteroard as Ive heard that the ply can warp over time.I was gonna use 12mm ply. Also can I use normal waterproof addy,or do I have to use an adhesive :huh2: that fixes to wood?
Many thanks.
Vin.

Marmox is a doddle to work with but it wont warp or suffer from water as would ply. Backerboard is a little harder due to you having to be careful when drilling and screwing as it can be brittle.
My 1st choice would be a good timber frame and backerboard.
Marmox is expensive and that would be my reason for placing it second.

plasterboard is fine for a bath panel also nice and cheap cut a u shape slot around the bath legs and fix the frame flush with the wood frame on the bath this keeps your tiles under the lip of the bath then screw the plasterboard when you set your tiles out cut a panel 20mm smaller than the tile or tiles depending on size you need fix then Silicon the joint if you need access just run a blade around the joint whatever you do don`t use ply :pete

yes i use the wedi alot, making bath panels and steps and also vanity units, they have there own fixings for bath panels .a timber frame becomes redundant . as every thing is basically wet assembled . at the moment i have 9 wet rooms to do if you go t o wedi your self tell them you are doing a project they will let you buy direct i have a name of abloke if needed but got to have a few to do

Try pop int0 into a CTD they have Schulter and Wedi however a quick google may give you a better price.

Marmox is avalible in a lot of TP however they also have an online shop.

There is dare I raise my own cement board. I would go for a standard 12mm board and you get this from various tile shops the most common is Topps but also in CTD/ Jewson/ TP/ SI etc check out the website for more info.

Personally I would steer clear of plasterboard unless you plan to seal real well. I am sure this works for a lot of people however if it isnt sealed properly it will end up turning to mush and the tiles will just start to fall out.

Plasterboard is not ok for use as a bath panel and shouldnt be advised to be used on any advice forum. Sorry, but does this need to be pointed out?

Hi Pete,
Its designated a wet area; the background materials for tiling to in wet areas should not be vulnerable to breakdown by water.
Panels are notorious for tiling difficulties since ply ones deform due to insufficient rigidity, and where the access section sits free is often an eyesore, as we've all found over the years.
Tile backer boards are what should be used and have solved all these historic problems associated with them. We use Wedi, although not the 'proper' one with feet very often, just the normal board, 20 or 30 mm.
