mapei grouts

Having a bad experience with these grouts recently, they seem to drastically change consistency after about 10 mins. I always mix as per instructions, then take my first dollop out and start grouting, before i take my second dollop (5 minutes later) i give the grout a quick stir with my float, when i go back, the grout drastically changed from usual mapei to a slurpy messy sludge. This has happened with 2 separate bags. Anyone had similar experiences, was cement grey!

You have not let it slake enough .. the polymers soften and make the mix slacken , if you let it slake long enough then you can stiffen it up..

I mix then leave for around 3-5 minutes then another quick stir with float, i do this all the time and usually ok. Its hard to explain how the consistency is changing, its like someone has poured a very small amount of latex additive in,sticky messy sluge

It is just polymers .. stiffen it up at this stage... this can be done but you cannot wet it up once setting occurs..

But Dave, I've been using mapei grouts for 5 years and never had this problem.

I bined half of the first bucket thinking it was a dodgy bag then same thing happens with the second. I love mapei grouts up till now. Going back to bal i think

I used to get a load of materials supplied by ctd and was always bal. Now my local was tile giant who always supplied mapei so was tied to them untill recently so now i have choice of mapei, bal and Webber! What's wrong with bal grout?

I had this happen to me earlier this week, it was porcelanosa colorstuk grout which is made by Mapei (I stand to be corrected) just gave it another mix and it was fine, washed off and dried an even colour.

The new Micromax 2 is a mental price, my bank manager hasn't approved my overdraft extension yet so haven't had a chance to try it :lol:

they are priced very similar to mapei in my ctd. I've only ever used the white, ivory and grey though with no problem but never used any of the darker colours.

have you used Webber grout?

Yes... very good grout , the only down side compared to mapei ucp is it is slower setting , apart from that, spot on grouts..

With you there Mark, I actually prefer UCP to the weber grout, bet you never thought you'd hear me say that!

I prefer UCP but weber is ok as well .

Ill give weber a go. Dave, you should try the new bal micromax grout, apparently its the actual cement that has the colour in it!

The tilemaster stuff is pretty good but I thnk the Jasmine needs to be slightly darker its almost white.

mapei for me mostly charlie apart from the white which is bal, havent come across that issue though
