just been thinking , what make's one in any trade, what are the criteria , should there be a real qualification , i ask as i was listing to the radio today wiliest i was driving and toby carvery were advertising ,say the meat is carved by our master caver's ,LOL not my experience some of them just have no clue with great thick slices , then i just read it again in a thread on the forum, so in your opinion tell us what do you think? would be the level to reach to be called a master

I personally dnt think qualification is required, I think grand experience of all aspects of the trade.
Thers a phrase, 10,000 hours to mastery
I think this is a massive understatement as at 10hrs a day 5 days a week this is about 4 years so no coincidence most apprenticeships take 4 yrs
But this kind of adds to my point I don't think qualifications should count as paper counts for nothing

I remember a guy (plastering) who served his apprenticeship in France for 7 years in all kinds of lime morters and moulding work also running shapes insitu.....

I met him on a Spab course and the guy was amazing, teaching us lathing fixing and lime plastering.

He was a master craftsmen and is no spring chicken.

phil hobson is a master craftsman because hes been in the business for 44 yrs. worked on every aspect of tiling, run big jobs, trained apprentices and done all the prep side too.

he's timed served the old way with a city and guild advanced craft done over 5 yrs and hes the first person to receive the heritage gold card.

have i missed anything phil? seriously, there aint many like him left so we are lucky to have the the old swine on here ;0)

timeless john goe beyond master craftsman, the only problem is, he served his time duringh the roman period and his tiling certificates and locked away with 'shroud of turin' ;0)

i cant call dave, gary and deano master craftsman because they are in their early mid 40's and they take offence because they both think they are still young :yikes:

Dave my advice is to go and look in the mirror, looking back at you is a master craftsmen who inspires awe in many many people and whose work speaks for itself
