mitering chair rail tiles

I am finishing up my bathroom. My first tile job. Walls and floor look great. I ran the wall tile up to chair rail height and will be putting chair rail tile on top of it. I will be mitering the chair rail tiles in the corner at 45 degrees. Do I leave the same grout line as I did for the walls or do I but up the two 45 degree miters in the corner?

Is this your first post? If yes, then welcome to the forum!

Yes, do leave the same grout line as you have for the tiles below to allow for slight movement of the walls - ideally the corner grout line should be filled with Silicon (matching your grout colour) instead to allow for said movement.

Sounds a nice bathroom, post some pictures when you're done!

Just to add to MG comments.......external corners ..yes mitre......internal corners are profile scribed......




You can get this shape by doing a mitre through the face of the border rather than the back...this will reveal the profile shape which you have to remove to get the perfect scribe..

What i mean by this is.....when you cut a mitre for an external corner , you would cut from the back to get the 45 angle...instead you can from the face side..this will reveal the shape of the profile and using your electric cutter you gently trim the biscuit part of the tile away , leaving the profile scribe.....this then butts upto the returning border in the corner creating a neater internal joint and better for expansion reasons and out of square corners...
If you just cut 2 x 45 internal mitres and the corner isn't square then the mitre won't be neat, leaving a wide opened mouth joint...

watch this video...it shows how to do it with timber but it is the same principle with dado tiles but instead of a coping saw you can use your wet tile saw....or if you prefer a copy saw with a carbundum type blade in...
