Mitre/overlap at edge of recess

Tiling this weekend in the bathroom, first timer, expect it to be slow but will take the time to get it right.
I'm tiling a window recess and am wondering how to handle the edge where the recess tiles meet the face tiles. I don't want to use plastic trim, so instead I'm going to try to mitre the tiles, but if I have problems getting an accurate cut I will overlap them instead. My question is, if overlapping the tiles - does the face tile overlap the edge of the reveal tile, or vice versa? I presume the face tile overlaps the reveal for a cleaner look, otherwise the edge of the reveal tiles would form a border around the edge of the recess.

If i were to do what you are suggesting the reveal tile would overlap the tiles around the window. Mitreing would be the way to go really but it takes time and a decent cutter.

Hi Sir Ramic, Any particular reason why you say it`s that way round or is it just personal preference? My initial thought was that the face tiles overlapping the reveal tiles would have looked neater as you won`t see the grout line unless you`re looking down onto the reveal?

I guess if your window worked full tile all the way around then it may look ok to have the face tile over lap the reveal but how many time would that happen.
In general though you would centre the window and have cuts all around. It depends what tile you were using, if it were a ceramic with either brown/red back then the edge would stand out a mile. If it were a stone type then it would look natural.
If you think back years ago ( yeah ok i am old) but tiles wer given RE ( round edges or bull nose) then they changed to what they called Border tiles. Which were basically a normal tile with 2 edges glazed. in these cases the reveal would always overlap the face tile......History lesson over

i agree with turkish on this one Neale m8,but


its what the customer wants that counts but in this case it will be Niall's preference that counts.


some tiles will only have bisciut edges so make sure the tiles you buy have a finished edge on them if an edge is to be showing.

Very interesting to see differing opinions on this matter. If i were in Nialls place at the weekend then my preferences would be
1,Trim, doesnt have to be plastic. There are some lovely heavily chromed metal trims about.
2, Mitre the edges ( i can do this quite easily, but rarely get asked )
3, last resort overlap the tiles ( in my way of course )

Nice one lads thanks for all the replies. *I'll get a look at how some of the chrome trim might look - and check the edge of the tiles. * They are porcelain and as if I remember right the biscuit is more or less the same colour as the face so lapping might not look too bad.

over lap all the way make life easy for your self if you dont it will p*** you of , this means misstakes , and you dont want that . all the best in your job

In the main, I'm with Sir Ramic. However, I try to avoid mitre-ing corners because you end with sharp edges that can become chipped very easily after a short time.

Metal edging looks classy and can compliment the shower screen fixings etc..
