Mixing cement based adhesive

Might sound like a silly question but- when mixing cement based adhesive with a 20-40 min life and you come to mix your next batch do you have to completely clean your bucket spotless or can you just mix you new batch with any small amount of remaining adhesive???
Just if its the latter it would save a bit of time???

I always clean my buckets before mixing a new batch, reason being, the leftover mix from the previous batch is some way through it's hardening process, the accelerators will affect the new batch causing it to go of a bit quicker. Also you will end up with hardened adhesive mixed in with your new mix after 3 or 4 buckets and it is not nice to work with.

Wish i colud say the same. I'm to lazy and mix away. I do scrape out whatever is left though, but never wash out. It is best practice to wash out every time though. I use a big bucket that ive had for a year and the sides are covered in adhesive. Sometimes when fixing a tile it will not press ito place because of a hard bit of adhesive has come of the bucket and been trowelled on to the wall / floor. as my dad says, "do as i say, not as i do"! Get into a habit of washing out the bucket everytime as it will save you time in the long run. Next time i get a new gorilla tub, i'm going to be a changed man!

Got to agree....clean or suffer the consequences...

On saturday, finishin off a bathroom, 60x33 porcelain.... customer bought the bare minimum amount of tiles... messin around with some messy cuts (tryin to make the tiles stretch and racin before the mix went off... I lost the race with one tile left to fix.. I must confess, lots of nasty evil thoughts ran thru my head.. "Silicon.....blue tac.....double sided tape.....a nail"
but in the end, I cleaned and scrubbed my bucket and made a small mix for the one tile:mad2:

can you mix cement based adhesive with a cordless drill for home renovations or do you need an electric mixer. we have a few 18v and 14v dewalt drills, would either of these be ok for mixing with a paddle, any help really appreciated.

You can use a cordless no probs...its just we use electric paddle mixers coz most of us mix large batches in one go...or for mixing SLC.........

Need to make sure you add the powder to the water and only do it in small bits at a time otherwise you may find you drill will struggle a bit, even if you have a low gear selection on your drill. I once nearly burnt out a mains powered Bosch drill by adding too much powder at once!

one last question if thats ok guys.. what do you call a large amount? is a full builders bucket a large amount? dont want to ruin his cordless drill so is half a bucket ok for a cordless, thanks in advance

I think a full bucket might be a tad too much for a cordless....just do half buckets then you won't waste as much either........
