Mixing tiles with different thicknesses

Hi,

I am doing some tiling in my bathroom and would like to put a horizontal strip of mosaics along the edge of the standard wall tiles. Problem is that the mosaics are thinner - standard wall tiles are 9.5mm thick whereas the mosaics are about 5mm.

What do you guys do in this situation? I'm trying to figure out if it would look OK, or if I need some sort of plastic trim?

Welcome Emma, this is a common problem so you are not alone. Tile the wall leaving a gap for your border, use a wooden baton to create the gap. I use a piece of tile (or use a bit of wood, hardboard etc) cut leaving an upstance, the gap width and in your case 4mm high. Fill the gap with adhesive and drag your bit of 'tile' along. this should leave you the right depth. press your mosaic in carefully using something flat such as a grout float, not your fingers. However told you that AT is a ****, cardboard will soak up moisture and is does not have any place in any tiling situation.
Were you told that when on a course?

That sounds very old school Aqua, definitely not in any tilers handbook that one

yea, i havent done it as its easier to use extra adhesive, if you look on my album. i done a similar thing and just bonded it out.

i was told the when the cardboard was soaked in pva, it wouldnt soak up any moisture.

Plus it was only what i was taught, not my opinion and nothing i have done, so please dont let it knock me reputation. also i have heard of tilers packing out with match stich is this ok?

Don't worry AT, no-one is knocking your reputation mate, you are only saying what you were told. You will come across so called 'experts' all the time. do what I do when they try to offer advice, give them a small piece of paper, about 20mm square and ask them to write down everything they know about tiling. They soon get the message.

But know im douting eberything ive been told, tis aint the first advice ive been told that is wrong. Knock of confidence

There are a few ways to get over this problem but i see this as a fast track method. i have some of the Mosaic Mesh to try when a job arises and will try and take piccies.
