Mosaic border

Would it be possible to use a bit of timber to put mosaic tiles on as a border to have it protruding from the wall or is that not advisable..

I don't know if it an acceptable practice but I have done it on a job. I screwed ply onto wall (very secureley) then tiled onto it. My mosaic border was about 5mm thinner than the tiles.

Ive used thin ply cut to the width of the boarder stuck mosiac onto ply while its laid on floor let it set then apply adhesive to back of ply lift into place and bed in, use wedges or spaces to get right hight and adjustment.

you could use ply i suppose
a better way is to screed up the difference in depth with fastset level it off with a template then tap the border home with a grout flout

I tile leaving a gap for the mosaic then cut a depth gauge out wood/ply lay spf into the area where the border is going to be laid and run the gauge across the tiles with the depth part into the spf and run along until flat, Leave to set. Done this many times. Hope this makes sence.

I do have done it for years never fails just acts as a packer and there is so much grout its dead solid.


On floors I follow whitebeam tho before you huh me again

Ok Ok I give in I use ply as its the best way to do it and its how they taught me in colege. As most of you know I am from china and decend from a long line of mosaic packers.

Maybe i should try all three together,but in which order i wonder,the cardboard theory sounds a little suspect,maybe the ply would be the best option as i am looking for something to stand really proud of the wall say by 8-10mm distance..
