mosaic pricing

Hi all, long time since I last posted.

I have lost touch a bit with prices. What is the going rate for mosaic tiling per square meter?

I live in the north of Scotland and the job is for a small contractor.

I have worked for him in the past, he trusts me to do a decent job and didn't even ask for a price before I started, the job is almost complete now.

I just sat down to make up a bill, and I have no idea where to start.

Here is a couple of quick snaps I took on my mobile.

Thanks for your comments guys.

I apologize....I didn't realize that we didn't discuss price openly.

P.S Thanks for shifting it to a more appropriate forum.

I'd say you'd have to price on day rate.
Good work bud!

hmm. ok lol I haven't worked on a day rate for years... does £150 A day sound reasonable .... plus fuel and materials.

I did it in 7 days working from 8 till 8 every night... that makes £1050 at 150 per day. I might put it on at like 50 per meter that comes out at 1200 plus materials....does that sound too high to you guys??

Very fair - I'd say a bargain!
Remember that 7 12 hour days is more like 11 days labour

i would say that was way to high a price for fix -only did you supple and fix materials as well ?

It does look a great job bigneil :thumbsup: nothing wrong with the work to look at !! butwho would pay 7days !!NOT ME, £150 a shift is OK, how many m2 is there neil ? not many

there is 24 m2 in the walls and 4.5 on the floor. contractor supplied materials, but I had to go and get extra trims, and 30 kilos extra of microflex grout.

150 per day is more than fair for the hours you worked on it
you should maybe have mentioned price before start. sometimes people get an iidea of price in mind

Sorry if it sound a shock to you neil ! but £700 tops if you were working for me ,i think you have taken to long on the job and you are looking for your customer to pick-up the tab mate, pre recession you might have got away with it !! not now !! same for any -of you guys that think you can get-away with top-prices now !! get real :hurray:

£700 labour only with regular tiles is the price in the midlands for that kind of meterage right now in a recession.

Nice job you've done. If it were me, I'd be £32pm2 fixing only, £38pm2 supplying & I'm central Scotland.
£912 labour only on tiling. Did you do the prep work as well? That of course would be an additional cost.
Was the choice yours to do 12 hour shifts? If not, you could add a cost for unsocialable hours.

. .. £700 all in, which would be less the £180 in materials and fuel, leaving £520 taxable income... 520-20% = £500 profit. that would be selling myself short.

but if you mean £700 in profit after tax, for 7 days of hard labour, then that sounds fair.

NO ! contractor called me after day 3 and said it had to be done by the weekend ... I didn't work 12 hour days for the first 3.... actual hours on the job would be about 68 hours .

Lets put it like this neil everything you get over £700 would be a bonus , you know how far you could push your guy ,so good luck with getting more ,keep us posted on what you charge please neil
if ever i'am around your woods working ,and i need some help ,i did a pool over in forfar just up the road from you ,then i would give you a shout ,but not at your prices lol 😛rrr:

well i am glad i have seen this work. it looks like good quality to me .
i dont really know what to say about how much this job is worth , but i would gladly pay far more than anything bandied around here. much more .
but then the difference is that maybe i could charge much more down south than up your way.
forget where you live though, i am really interested in this type of work as i am being asked to quote for not just stone in high end pool complexes but this type of mosaic in changing /jacuzzi areas .
check out deano tile mosaic no7 . this is in and i need to be part of this

I think £40 per m plus materials and expenses is a fair price, the job looks very well finished and the quality should be reflected in the price IMO.

Recession , what recession .?..

Neil, you will always get guys who will work for virtually nothing , IMO mate if that was the price for the job above , then it was a good job for a fair price for tricky job...

I never get into pricing issues on here as in giving my prices out.. i charge what i think i am worth , so if you think Neil your price was fair then go for it again.. don't sell yourself short.. just because a tiler is cheap does not mean they will win work... trust me on that.

150 per day plus fuel and materialsl or 35 m2 plus fuel and materials,
you have made a lovely job so dont leave yourself short

Same as Dave for me, good job fair price. I hate the mentality both with customers and trades alike where everyone drives prices down using the recession as an excuse. I would never drop my prices to buy work, but I do vary my prices to suit the job.

I know its late, but my life these days seems to be a never ending story of crap. I looked at the workmanship, the cuts the details, everything else I can gleam from the photos, and the hours you've put in, then I opened up a costing sheet, to see where I would come in at, without all my overheads and retentions and all the crap I have to build in. Iv'e come out at £1275.00, and that is reflected because you also worked the weekend.

Thats labour only, without the materials, so list those as a separate item. I think that is a very fair price for the standard of workmanship you did. Well done its a lovely job.

I take issue with your comments, here, because of the amount of cuts and detailing on this job that he has had to do. I think it is you that should get in the real world, I wouldn't insult any of my lads by paying £700.00 for work of this standard.

I would rather a man take his time on the mosaic and get it right, and pay him a decent rate than worry him into making any mistake on the cuts etc.

I understand you have your opinion, but I have mine, and people are still willing to pay for decent workmanship. Ok a bit of a blunder by not quoting upfront, but we live and learn.
