Daz, this doesn't answer any of your questions, but we get eggs from a guy that teaches with Christina. All organic feed to the hens, no shots or hormones, the hens run free, and the eggs are fantastic. I hope this works out for you.

Its not about the money its about quality of life, i recall a woman who gt some recharged battery hens and one of them laid in the car on the way home. That was on Chris evans radio show.

in the early days when they were on "point of lay" we had no probs getting 6 a day from 6 hens, worst,,,worst... thing you can do Daz is give them names!!!,,,, our birds have probs come to the end of their egg laying cycle so I guess " Dolly Bird" may be first in the pot, followed by Mrs Brown..........

I clean mine about every 3rd day Daz, newspaper and wood shavings on hen house floor and straw in nesting box (although shredded paper is okay too, I take enormous satisfaction from hens pooing on my shredded bank letters, lol!), cost wise for food it costs me about £17 for 2 bags of layers pellets and a bag of mixed corn, this typically will keep 'em fed for 3-4 months

Speaking of eggs, Mrs Z made egg salad for lunch today, using the oh-so-fresh eggs that we buy from the local guy I mentioned! Yummmmmm!

We'd love to get some but holidays and whatnot already cause a bit of a maul with the two dogs and two guinea pigs so we had to give it a miss. Though we only eat organic free-range eggs and I don't think I could go back to the cheapo egg now as they really do taste different. The yolk in a free-range is gorgeous.
